The Role of an RD in Eating Disorder Recovery

A registered dietitian experienced in eating disorder recovery has the expertise to identify an unhealthy relationship with “food”.

If a client has been in-patient for treatment, a step-down to outpatient care is imperative for a full and maintained recovery. A key to success in outpatient care is continuing to see a registered dietitian for support in a less structured environment.

The transition from an inpatient / residential treatment back to one’s home environment can be harder than expected. One’s eating disorder behaviors may resurface when less structure is available. Many clients may have triggers returning to the same environment in which their eating disorder symptoms developed. A qualified registered dietitian can assist clients with maintaining the changes developed and reinforced at the inpatient program as well as helping the client in continuing to apply what they learned to their home setting.

Clients receiving medical nutrition therapy after their inpatient treatment will continue to need nutrition education as there is always still more to learn.  Information taught in the inpatient setting needs to be consistently presented to the client as repetition is key to replacing negative eating disorder beliefs.   With that said, clients may not have been as ready to receive accurate and evidence-based nutrition knowledge when it was presented in an inpatient setting.  However, a client may be more willing to accept it as eating disorder beliefs are continued to be challenged and their recovery advances.

Meeting with a registered dietitian can be an opportunity for continued improvement and support. Regular nutrition counseling sessions can offer the client a chance to voice concerns about what they’re seeing in their eating behaviors and give them an opportunity for objective feedback. In a world of misconceptions about food and body image, a registered dietitian can be a much needed voice of support and encouragement for the recovering individual to continue newly established eating behaviors.
